Dr. Quain is the author of 17 books. He sold an astonishing 2.3 MILLION
copies, in 20 languages. Bill's advice to authors who want to make money from their books is simple: His writing and sales performance earned him admission to both the Independent Book Publishers Hall of Fame, & the Self-Publishing Hall of Fame.
1. It doesn't matter how many books you start, it only matters how many books you finish.
2. It really doesn't matter how many books you finish, it matters how many books you sell!
Bill also draws upon his own experiences and writing to help authors meet their goals. His book 10 Rules to Break & 10 Rules to Make is a prime example. One of the rule to break is "Accept Valid Excuses". Dr. Quain knows that excuses are one of the reasons authors do not make money. "There is no such thing as a valid excuse" he advises. An excuse is just a way to postpone success. If you want something, you cannot make excuses. You have to do whatever it takes."
Bill Quain could make excuses if he wanted. He is legally blind from Macular Degeneration - unable to read text, drive a car, or do many of the things most people take for granted. Despite this fact, he travels the world, speaking about his books. In China, for example, he is a bit of a Rock Star! (He recently had to change hotels to avoid getting mobbed by autograph seekers.) He never lets his handicap stop him. He is on a mission, and he does not have time to make excuses.
Bill is a graduate of Cornell University, Florida International University, and the University of New Orleans. He was a full-time college professor for 25 years, before retiring.
Before entering academics, Bill was a hotel owner/operator, a restaurant owner, and an executive chef. In 2002, he became the founding guest host of PBS television's cooking show for the blind, called "Cooking Without Looking". In 2006, Oscar Winning actress Marlee Matlin recruited him to help on ABC's hit show "Extreme Makeover Home Edition".
Bill lives in Ocean City, New Jersey, with his wife of 25 years, and their two daughters. Return to Faculty
